Week 2

Literature Review🕮

What is literature review?

  • A survey of literature such as books, articles, write-ups, and other sources which explains important topics, theories, and concepts crucial to research of interest.
  • Analyses sources appropriate to our research interest and aims to provide a detailed evaluation and synopsis of them.
  • It critically analyses the information gathered by identifying gaps in current knowledge; by showing limitations of theories and points of view; and by formulating areas for further research and reviewing areas of controversy.

The question now is WHY?

What is the importance of it?

1. Assessment of the current state of research on a topic:

  • Searching relevant information sources.
  • Ascertaining what have already been found about the topic.
  • To what extend has this topic been studied.

2. Identification of the experts on a particular topic:

  • Divulge on the researchers that published most on the topic of our interest.
  • These researchers would most likely be in that field of expertise which would be a crucial reference and consultation.

3. Identification of key questions about a topic that need further research:

  • New discovery of angles and research disparities which promotes further exploration on the topic of interest.

4. It helps steer clear of inadvertent plagiarism:

  • A safety net to protect yourself from charges of plagiarism.
  • Saves time, effort and resources.

What is a good literature review?

1. Choosing of the right sources
This includes
- We had to chose the right number of sources
- We picked the most up to date sources

2. Critical evaluation
- We had to detect any inconsistencies
- We are actively pointing out weaknesses on procedures

3. Unbiased writing
- Ensuring our writing isn't biased
- Considering of the different purposes of writers/readers

4. Good structuring
- Considering our different options and picking the best option
- Usage of chronological ordering for readers to easily read and make sense of the information

Topics decided on
 1. Food
Certain types of chocolates melting in its wrapper, this leads to trouble when removing the wrapper, and when they do, they will have sticky fingers

2. Home economics
Ironing clothes after washing
Some people may be too lazy, or some may have no time to iron clothes and wrinkled clothes are frowned upon, hence an automated system would benefit a large amount of people.

Problem Statement we chose :

Fast paced of life may stop some people from being able to iron their clothes. Besides making crumpled shirts the normal thing, we chose to face the problem head on. How will we do this?

We decided on an automatic ironing machine/chamber !
